The first thing you put into your mouth upon waking up plays a vital role in setting up your metabolic tone for the day. Assuming that the food eaten previous night has been processed and suitably disposed, the gastric tract then prepares itself for a fresh start the next day and what you begin with has a large impact on health. Adults usually start their day with cup of tea or coffee while children are forced to gulp down a glass of milk . Is this ideal way to start your day?

Stomach produces acid (HCl) to digest food and even at rest or in the fasting state, the pH of the stomach is between 1-2 i.e. acidic. Once the last meal of the day is digested and absorbed, the pH returns to the fasting state. The first thing consumed in the morning after the overnight fast should be such that it helps to neutralize the acidic environment of the stomach rather than increase acid production.

Fresh fruit or vegetable juices offer the perfect blend of nutrients and appropriate pH level suitable for the breaking of overnight fast. There are many advantages of juicing, when done the right way and at the right time. I am sharing a few benefits that seem most appealing:

Alkalizing effect: Fresh fruit or vegetable juice helps to alkalize your gastric tract. The acid in the stomach needs to be buffered with foods that have an alkaline pH (also called alkaline ash foods). We have mentioned before that starting day with tea/ coffee or milk can in fact be counterproductive as these foods promote more acid production predisposing such individuals towards gastric problems including hyper acidity, bloating ,etc https://blog.ekincare.com/2016/08/31/why-tea-and-biscuit-first-thing-in-the-morning-is-not-right/

Simplified nutrients : Juicing a fruit or vegetable eliminates the fiber, especially the indigestible or insoluble fraction. Although the fiber is very valuable, on certain days when we want our systems to truly rest giving this fiber free food enables easy digestion and absorption of nutrients.  For example, when you eat a carrot, you are only able to assimilate a very small percentage of the beta-carotene. But when you juice, you are able to assimilate nearly 100% of the beta-carotene!

Fulfill requirements through smaller portions : The recommended 5 servings of fruits and vegetables may get difficult to achieve with too much bulk to handle. Turning atleast 2 servings into juice can help ensure you get the servings and save some effort on chewing. Juicing helps to obtain larger portions in easily digestible and less time consuming way.

Cleans our system: Juices help to flush out toxins from the blood. This real-life cleansing action as profound impact on all cells powered by blood.

Consuming fresh juices early in the morning can be an effective way to ensure a clean, healthy and energetic start to the day. Juices can be best buddies on days of fasting or detox days as they ensure complete rest and recovery.

Juicing fresh and seasonal produce can be indeed fruitful !
